Repeal the Dickey Amendment

The June 28 shooting at the Capital Gazette reminds us that the epidemic of gun violence that claims more than thirty thousand lives a year continues unabated. The Dickey Amendment, which prevents research into gun violence, is still on the books, despite meaningless “clarifying" language from Congress that came with no funding. The result: we know shockingly little about the sort of policies that could make a real difference.

Join us at Pizza Luce in Richfield at 6pm on July 12 to write Congress and demand a full repeal of the Dickey Amendment along with dedicated funding into gun safety research!

Eric Dayton to Speak at Rally for Science

We are delighted to announce that Eric Dayton has joined our lineup of speakers for the Rally for Science on May 19.

Born and raised in Minneapolis, Eric Dayton and his brother co-founded Askov Finlayson in 2011, an outdoor clothing company inspired by year-round exploration with the mission to Keep the North Cold. The company measures its own carbon footprint and then gives away 110% of that amount annually to support leading-edge climate change solutions. Askov Finlayson has committed $1 million over the next five years to fund some of the world’s most innovative climate action organizations.

Rally postponed

Has this never-ending winter got you down?  It's got your organizers down too!   Because of the forecast cold winds and snow, we have decided to postpone the Rally for Science.

We want to have a fun, family-friendly event where we can all talk about the importance of science and its impacts, but this year's weather will likely make it less fun. We want to thank everyone who has supported us so far and would likely be willing to Rally out into the snow.

We will let you all know when we get a new date for our amazing speakers and friends. Please stay tuned, and sorry for any inconvenience due to planning.

Take Action to Support Renewable Energy

Harvey.  Irma.  Maria.  Wildfires in the West impacting air quality right here in Minnesota.  We are feeling the effects of climate change today, and too often it is the poorest and most vulnerable among us who are hurt the most.  It is now more urgent than ever to take action.  Our state already gets 20% of its electricity from clean sources and is on track to achieve a goal of 25% clean electricity by 2025, under a law signed by Tim Pawlenty.  However, this February, a bipartisan bill was authored in the Minnesota Senate by Sen. Nick Frentz and Sen. Karin Housley, and in the Minnesota House by Rep. Erin Maye Quade and Rep. Joe Schomacker to raise that goal to 50% clean energy by 2030.  But it's seen almost no movement since!  We've made it easy to write to state lawmakers and demand action on this bill.  Share, and urge your friends and family to write too!

he March for Science was the dawn of a new movement to protect the role of science as a public good.  Already lawmakers feeling the pressure and starting to change their behavior.  Shortly after the march, Congress passed a budget for the remainder of the fiscal year that protected public funding for science, in sharp contrast to the dramatic cuts proposed by the Trump administration.  And just recently three Republicans unexpectedly joined Democrats to protect the regulation of methane emissions from drilling on public lands.
